Tips and Tricks - Word

Word 2003 Styles

Do you find yourself confused by the number of styles that are available in any given document.  Not sure which one's to use?

Did you know you can modify Word documents and templates to Show only the Styles that are configured and relevant to the document?  This streamlines the use of styles by your users and eliminates much of the confusion surrounding using styles.

To modify the list of styles displayed in a document or template - do the following:

  • Open the desired Document or Template

  • From the Format Menu, select Styles
  • From the Show listbox, select Custom and the following dialog will appear:

  • In the Category list box - select All Styles to see the full list
  • Select each Style name you wish to be visible and de-select those you wish to hide.
  • You may optionally select to remove Other formatting items which may appear in the style box.  For example, the Style to Clear Formatting or direct character formatting for Font, Paragraph and Bullets & Numbering.
  • You may also elect to Save your Style settings in the template your document is based on.  This option will allow all new documents created based on your template to only display the Styles you define.

A few quick settings can streamline the use of Styles for your users and make Word Styles a feature your users will appreciate.
